My reading tutoring uses Spell to Write and Read, often called SWR.

Spell to Write and Read grew directly from the instructional approach found in Romalda Spalding’s The Writing Road to Reading.

Both approaches teach children to understand how written English works through:

• phonograms that connect sounds with letters and letter combinations
• careful handwriting instruction
• spelling taught through sound rather than memorization
• spelling rules and word analysis
• direct, systematic instruction
• frequent review until skills become automatic
• reading developed through a strong foundation in spelling and phonics

 

Wanda Sanseri, who trained directly under Romalda Spalding,  wrote Spell to Write and Read to enhance  these principles into a detailed teaching sequence with extensive word lists and additional guidance for teaching and review.

For tutoring purposes, the distinction matters far less than the foundation they share. If you are looking for a tutor who understands Spalding-style phonogram instruction and teaches children to analyze words instead of guessing at them, my approach will feel familiar.
