Spell to Write and Read
When your child struggles with reading, more practice is not always the answer. First we need to discover where the difficulties lie.
Susan is a former Reading Interventionist, home educator, and High School English teacher.
Through systematic, multisensory lessons directed at addressing struggling readers' missing knowledge and skills, we build the confidence in them to become strong readers and writers. Adding quality literature at home for inspiration is a wonderful way parents can add to this experience by instilling in them a love for reading and enjoying quality time learrning through classic children's literature.
Students who move forward in their reading often continue with traditional grammar and writing lessons.

Start with a Free Reading Assessment
Every new reading student begins with an individual assessment and parent consultation. I look at several areas of reading development, including:
• Phonemic awareness
• Knowledge of letter and phonogram sounds
• Decoding unfamiliar words
• Spelling and encoding
Since comprehension and fluency follow strong decoding, these areas may be addressed after phonograms are well practiced and automaticity has developed:
• Oral reading and fluency
• Literal comprehension
• Deeper reading comprehension
After the assessment, I describe your child's strengths, identify areas that need attention, and recommend a plan for instruction. There is no charge for the initial reading assessment.
Reading Lessons
Spell to Write and Read
$560/Month
55 minutes, twice per week
Reading instruction is individualized according to your child's assessment and progress.
Lessons include:
• Systematic phonics based on Spalding and Spell to Write and Read principles
• Direct instruction in phonograms, spelling, and decoding
• Practice reading unfamiliar words rather than relying on memorized word lists
• Spelling and written language practice
• Fluency development
• Vocabulary and comprehension
• Oral narration to strengthen attention and understanding
• Well-written stories and books selected according to the child's reading ability
• Cursive handwriting and grammar instruction when appropriate
• Weekly parent updates with suggestions for short practice between lessons
• Access to online reading and spelling practice between lessons
Progress is reassessed regularly so that instruction changes as your child's needs change.
ONLINE PRIVATE TUTORING
Lessons take place online, allowing your child to work from home while receiving individual instruction.
Parents receive regular communication about progress, areas of focus, and appropriate practice between lessons.

Students begin working with me because reading has become difficult. As their skills grow, in phonogram mastery, decoding, and word identification, our work progresses, into grammar, composition, literature, and academic writing.
Families often stay for several years as their children's needs change.
One family first came to me looking for Spell to Write and Read instruction for a struggling reader. After seeing their daughter's progress, they enrolled three more of their children for tutoring.
